How to Find Cheap Flights

The holidays are coming up quickly and people are racing to purchase their flights out to see family and friends. We’re avid travelers here at HYDAWAY. So we created a list of tips we use to find cheap flights.

Book Your Trip Early

This may seem like common sense – but it’s better to buy your airline ticket early than waiting for last-minute travel sales! In fact, airfare prices tend to increase exponentially the closer they get to your travel date.

The best window to purchase your tickets is approximately 30 days in advance or earlier. But not too early – planning ahead too far can cause you to miss some awesome deals within that prime window! One and a half to two months beforehand is a good window to aim for. Check out this graph from Cheapair.com:flight guide

Travel When Others Won’t

The most expensive days to fly out are Fridays and Sundays, which makes sense: people want to take the weekend to travel without missing a day of work. This is why these days are more expensive to fly in and out.

Instead, consider taking a couple of extra days and fly in and out during the middle of the week. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the most common days to see the cheapest flights available since the people traveling are commonly business flyers.

Getting a great deal on your fare could also mean sacrificing a couple of hours to nab that early-hour flight or braving the last flight of the day. Bonus: Taking the cheap airfare and early flight could mean a little extra legroom during your travels since it could be a bit more empty than high traffic times during the day.

Be Aware of Seasonality Trends

Frequent flying times – think the holidays, spring break, or summer vacation – can cause airline fares to surge considerably. Waiting until the last minute can cause a huge increase in prices, way more than they would during regular shopping times!

Consider planning your flight for the holidays even earlier than you would for a regular trip to nab a cheap flight, maybe 2-3 months in advance. A good way to check this is by using Google Flights and comparing days the calendar feature allows you to see the prices each month/day. Also, it is simple to turn on price tracker using this platform which will make easy to monitor the prices.

Stay Up to Date With Your Favorite Airline

Most airlines will often send e-mails for flash sales for cheap flights to get their seats to fill up quickly. Sign up for regular updates and stay on track with their trends – you may even catch accidental pricing mixups and get your flight for ridiculously cheap!

For example, end-of-summer sales are often a common time to send out a blast, and you may be able to use these discounts for the holiday season!

Compare Your Flights

The easiest way to get the cheapest flight possible is to make sure you’re getting the best deal out of all possible choices. The best way to do this is to use an aggregator, like Skyscanner.com or Momondo.com. While you may have to avoid using your airline of choice to get the best deal, this will guarantee that you will receive the lowest possible price for the day you fly out.

Here at HYDAWAY we know that buying flights out is a major expense, and we want to try to limit that expense any way that we can!
